At the second ping of the laptop he looked up, he had managed to trace what he wanted, it had been a long week, hell it had been months to get to this point, but it was all about to pay off.


6 months earlier whilst playing around with some open source hardware he had learned something, you can collect plane data in the raw, thats right all this talk about sophisticated systems, GPS , special equipment etc, but at the end of the day, big planes in the sky worked just like your wifi.
only easier to get to , they have a beacon that reported several key bits of data, hight, speed,plane id, flightno, plane type, hell if you googled its plane id,  you could see a picture of that plane that some plane spotter had put up on the net, felt like you could wave at them.

any geek knew,  that as soon as you make something easy, you sacrifice security, take Wifi, most shout out their name of the connection to help you, the original WEP encryption was weak and was broken years ago, so WPA/WPA2 came in and users were advised,  sometimes quite strongly,  to change default passwords ( you know the ones you can look up on the net when your having connection issues )  so to make it easy and convenient to help your friends connect, they created WPS , an 8 digit number , this is now the weakest point of your router/network if enabled. with todays puters thats not a hard task to break. and with access

so back to planes, checking out local planes with free software & 25 quid hardware was fun, but quickly became boring, how about tracking mmm, build a database, pump in the records, 3 weeks later and the  local airfield, was seeing some quite reqular visitors at irregular times, not just random , but calculated, looked random over several days but repeated after 21,  just around then my old CB and radio scanners, came to my mind, i mean i could play detective and go to the airground and wait, but i do have a day job, and if you want to track you have to log, so lets let the puter handle it, a Software Defined Radio, can output to a file, i can make the data move to a new file based on size then compress the old one, win win, no space issues and it can run all night. so for a few nights it was set to auto scan looking for a signal, usual taxi, police, CB which i had thought was dead and some plane ground coms

you expect taxis at airfields, even the odd limmo, but traveller vans, motorbikes, well the bikes got my attention, Fireblade, Hyabusa & V-Max , you often see them on the airfield at weekends doing quarter miles but at night ?, personally i would have gone for the V-Max, i am not a speed freak but rat & muscle bikes do appeal

i know i said let the puter deal with it, but the evidence was very interesting. and sometimes you just want to see things yourself, well i also discovered the airfield was monitoredby dvd recorders not digital so no shortcuts.
